Economic Development
Economic development has traditionally been defined as work that increases the amount of jobs and new capital investment in a particular place. In today’s knowledge economy, this an outdated view. UNC Charlotte subscribes to a newer definition as endorsed by groups such as the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ (APLU) Committee on Innovation, Competitiveness, and Economic Prosperity (CICEP) and the University Economic Development Association (UEDA). This newer definition of economic development means proactive institutional engagement by the university, along with our partners and stakeholders, in encouraging sustainable growth of the competitive capacities that contribute to the advancement of our region through the realization of individual, business, community, and regional-to-global economic and social potential.
The university enhances the competitiveness of our region through activities that focus on:
- Human capital and talent development
- Research and innovation and
- Stewardship of place
If we are successful using this definition of economic development, in the long run the Charlotte region will prosper because it will be more attractive to businesses, entrepreneurs, job-seekers and even students.
We recognize that UNC Charlotte has a unique role to play in helping the Charlotte region to grow into a global powerhouse. The Office of Research Partnerships serves as the single point of contact between the university and the business community in fostering partnerships among faculty, companies and government to stimulate investment and create jobs. We also work with economic development allies at the local regional and state level to help win new economic development investment for the region.
Whether you work with an existing business in the Charlotte region, or a new company considering opening an office here, we can assist you with access to the university’s research expertise, student talent pool or an amazing array of specialized equipment that can better position your business to compete and win.
